The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
This East Coast Ska band drew a lot of attention to themselves with a spot in the movie "Clueless". Their success has helped bring the Ska scene to national attention. The eight piece band ( including one guy who dances on stage for the whole show) has been touring nationally, here are the pictures from when they stopped in Seattle.

What can I say except I agree. These guys put on a seriously kick ass show. Lots of jumping around, tons of energy, these guys were in the groove. At one point they invited a couple of the fans to come up and dance with them. Soon a good half of the musically entranced crowd was up on stage with them. Did they stop and make everyone get off, nope they kept on playing. It was trully a sight to see. They played a good hour before coming back with a strong 3 song encore including "Rude 69".

Reel Big Fish
This band scored big with their hit Sell-Out. Now their touring the country with Olympia based Ska band Engine 54. I got to catch them at a local music/snowboard festival called Board Stiff.

This hyperactive band took the stage to a fairly big crowd. Their fast moving Ska sounds got the crowd all excited. |

The crowd was definitely at the show to catch the Bosstones, but Reel Big Fish made their stay worthwhile. |

Engine 54
This Olympia based Ska band takes most of it's influence form first and second wave Ska. These guys play with a much more old-school sound making it extremley popular within the Ska community. Rumors are flying that they may sign with a major label soon. Meanwhile they continue to be a huge draw around the Northwest region.
The Jerks
An Olympia based Ska-Core band. I caught these guys at The Sunnyside Music Festival in May '97, they had only played 6 shows or so as a band. Since that time they have added a full horn section to accompany their more punk influenced style.

The Feds
My favorite NW Ska band. A bunch of guys from Vancouver, Wa got together to form a Ska band. These guys are starting to gain a foothold in the NW scene. The Feds have a more traditional Ska sound, going back to the days of The Specials. These pictures were taken in Oct. '96, the bass guitar has been replaced with a much cooler stand up Bass. If you get a chance, check these guys out.
Bumpin Uglies
A rockin Punk/Ska combo. These guys start off with a classic Ska intro and half way through switch to a raging Punk tune. This switch inspired the pictures of the Ska dancers farther down on this page.
To me this photo captures the spirit of what a rock show should be. I guess that's why it's one of my all time favorites. The angles, the energy, the lighting all come together to form this magnificent image.
What is Ska anyway? Ska is dance music, first and foremost. Ska was a Jamaican dance music that swept out of Jamaica in the early 1960s. Ska features a strong bass and drum rhythm section, guitars, keyboards and brass. Ska fans are also know as Rude Boys/Girls, they show up at shows in force. Rude Boys/Girls can be recognized by their suit and tie look similar to the Swing movement in Europe and Germany in the 40's and 50's. Ska fans also have a tendency towards plaid as well. Here are some photos of some Rude Boys at a Bumpin Uglies show.
